Europe: Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic are unlikely to meet recycling targets for household and construction waste set in the EU’s revised Waste Framework Directive, according to a survey of waste management firms in these countries. The findings were presented to the annual FEAD waste conference in Helsinki, Finland.
Under EU law, half of the combined glass, paper, metals and plastics recyclables from ‘households or other origins’, as well as 70% of construction waste, are to be recycled by the year 2020.
Austria-based waste association VÖEB says a major problem in Eastern Europe is the preponderance of new landfills. Some countries are even receiving EU cohesion funding to build landfills that are not needed, a representative said in Helsinki. He noted that municipalities can be reluctant to build more recycling facilities because they are afraid of losing revenues from landfill fees.
