Fortum's new biomass-fuelled CHP plant in Pärnu, Estonia, has been inaugurated. The plant, which uses local fuels such as woodchips, wood residues from industry and milled peat, has a production capacity of 24 MW of electricity and 50 MW of heat.
Its annual sales volume will amount to 110 GWh of electricity and 220 GWh of heat, which is expected to cover the entire district heating demand of Pärnu.
The Pärnu CHP plant is efficient and considered environmentally friendly as the environmental impact from the production process of heat and electricity at the plant has been reduced to a minimum due to its bubbling fluidized bed technology (BFB) boiler and the utilisation of local bio-fuels only. The company estimates that 10 more towns in Estonia have the potential to adopt similar, but smaller capacity CHP plants in the future.
Further developments in the field of biomass CHP in Estonia are already under way:
The Metso-Wärtsilä joint venture MW Power will supply a € 15 M biomass CHP plant to Oü Helme Energia in Helme. The biomass CHP plant is scheduled to come online in the third quarter of 2012. It will produce 15 MW of heat and 6.4 MW of electricity, which will be partly used in the customer's own pellet factory whilst the rest will be distributed into national grid.
