Wind farm to be built in northwest Hungary

Hungarian wind-power company Pannon Szélerőmű will build a seven-turbine wind farm near Bábolna this summer, the regional newspaper 24 Óra reported on Wednesday.

Pannon Szélerőmű CEO László Hoffmann told the newspaper that the company expects to begin operation of the 15 MW wind farm in September.

The newspaper wrote that construction of the new wind farm will increase the number of wind turbines generating power in Komárom-Esztergom county to 69, noting that each turbine satisfies the annual electricity demand for between 1,500 and 1,800 households.

Spanish wind-power company Iberdrola Renovables commissioned its own wind farm, the largest in Hungary, in the same county last year, aiming to operate 62 wind turbines. The first 25 turbines of the type Gamesa G90 were completed in February 2009, while the remaining 37 will be built this year, each with 2MW of nominal power. The wind farm has already started to market electricity last year.

In February, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) signed an agreement to make equity investments up to €125 million in the form of capital increases in Iberdrola Renovables' wind farm units in Hungary and Poland, acquiring 25% stakes in the Hungarian and Polish units with the investment.
