The year 2010 saw rapid growth in the share of renewable energy in the total energy balance of Latvia. Renewable energy production (biomass, hydropower, wind power, biogas, biofuel) surged 2.3 % year-on-year, totalling 48.47 %, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.
Renewable energy sources play a significant role in the Latvian energy balance. Biomass (wood) and hydro resources, followed by wind power, biogas, straw and other kinds of biomass are the main types of renewable energy in Latvia. Several new biogas power plants and biogas cogeneration plants started their operation. Thus, in 2010, electricity produced from biogas rose by 30 %, compared to 2009, while hydro electricity power plants produced 2 % more electricity.
Last year, the share of renewable energy resources in the final consumption accounted for 31.7 %. As regards the transformation sector, 16.3 % of the total fuel comprised different types of renewable fuel (wood, straw, other biomass, biogas, biodiesel fuel). In terms of percentage, this corresponds to last year’s level despite cogeneration plants producing 9% more renewable energy. 2010 also reported a rise in the consumption of renewable energy (biofuel) in the transport sector.
