Mechel has started construction of a biochemical cleaning facility in Chelyabinsk, Russia, to treat phenolic waste water from Mechel-Coke's coke and chemicals production process.
The facility will treat all of the wastewater produced by Mechel-Coke, which is used for slaking coke.
The facility neutralises the wastewater by applying special complexes of phenol-destroying microorganisms, which break down waste into water and carbon dioxide.
The technology will allow the firm to thoroughly cleanse its emissions of phenols, thiocyanates and ammonium nitrogen, and ensures higher neutralisation efficiency.
The $27.5m facility has been designed by Eastern Coal and Chemical Research Institute in Yekaterinburg.
