PRAGUE (CIA) – The Czech Republic is a clear leader in the usage of solar energy among the 12 new European Union member countries. Photovoltaic power plants (PVPP) with total output of 485MW were operated in the entire region at the turn of 2009 and 2010; the Czech Republic accounted for 463MW (95.5%) of the total. This stems from the Status of Photovoltaics 2009 - New Member States study, compiled by the Warsaw University of Technology and its partners.
Slovenia ranked second with PVPPs with the installed output of 8MW, Bulgaria third with 5.7MW and Cyprus fourth with 3.33MW. The output in Slovakia totalled just 210kW. New photovoltaic power plants with output totalling 408.6MW were building in the Czech Republic last year. Their output thus grew 8.5x on the end of 2008. The PVPP output in Slovenia and Bulgaria almost quadrupled last year.
