Italian carmaker Fiat has signed a contract with Serbia to acquire 67% of an auto assembly plant throught Fiat Automobili Srbika, a 1-billion-euro joint venture it forged with the state last year. "Serbia has given the order for transfer of Zastava Automobili's property to the Fiat Automobili Srbija joint venture. The whole process should be completed by December 29, when Fiat will pay an initial 100 million euros," Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic told reporters.
The joint venture includes investments of 700 million euros in new equipment and modernization of the factory to an annual output capacity of 200,000 cars. Two Fiat models will be produced and sold in European and US markets.
"Now we have to deal with our new factory and implement the investment and start production of new models in the second part of 2011," said Fiat vice-president Alfredo Altavilla. Another 100 million euros will be paid in 2010.
Fiat delayed its investment in Zastava due to the global financial downturn.
