Energy company CEZ Bulgaria vowed to make its Varna thermal power plant more eco-friendly in bid to extend its life through 2030. Petr Dokladal, regional manager of CEZ for Bulgaria, said that the project for decreasing the CO2 emissions of the power plant would require investments of EUR 100 million. He precised that CEZ will rely on attracting investors in order to ensure part of the financing. The company will set up a tender for the modernzation in July, 2012. According to plan units 4,5 and 6 of the power plant will be modernized. An overhaul of unit 3 is also possible. According to the conditions of Bulgaria’s entry in the EU, units 1, 2 and 3 are set operate until December 31, 2015. If they stop operating the price of electricity produced by units 4, 5 and 6 would most likely go up.
