Polish municipalities of Stoszowice, Wierzchoslawice and Bielsko-Biała won the ’2011 Municipality of the Future’ competition, organised by the FREE initiative in Poland. The awards were also given to the first ‘passive’ school in Poland, a photovoltaic farm, and a programme promoting innovative energy solutions. The Municipality of Stoszowice (Lower Silesia) won in the category ‘Innovations for the Climate’, for the project ‘First passive school in Poland’. Wierzchoslawice was awarded for the ‘Photovoltaic Farms’ project. Bielsko-Biala (Silesian province) won in the category ‘Promoter of Innovation’ for the ‘Promotional and educational campaign ENGAGE’. The project aims at encouraging citizens to sustainably use energy and decrease energy usage. The jury also awarded the municipalities of Plock, Grybów, Piaseczno, Kisielice, Polkowice, Bielsko-Biala and Rabka-Zdrój. “The competition proved once again that there are many Polish municipalities, which invest in energy efficiency and environmentally friendly solutions. They are, at the same time, improving the standard of living and modernising non-urbanised areas,” said Sylwester Śmigiel, of Gaspol, Chairman of the FREE initiative in Poland. “This year’s contest coincides with the Polish EU Presidency, which put energy security high on the EU agenda. Therefore, when selecting the winners we also looked into how they are contributing to the overall Polish and European energy strategy,” he added.
