Serbia assembles 15,000 Fiat Puntos in eight months, targets 30,000 autos for 2010

Serbia's Zastava Automobili auto plant assembled 15,000 Fiat Punto models in the last eight months, chairman Aleksandar Ljubic reported

"We hope ... that our factory will produce 30,000 cars in 2010 and that we will have great news on breaking production records," Ljubic told a news conference.

He said the factory would become the property of Fiat after the Italian company made a down payment.

In a recent visit to Italy by Serbian President Boris Tadic, Fiat stated it would reveal by year's end details of an 800-million-euro investment in Zastava (www.zastava-automobili.com) .

“Cars produced in the plant could be sold in a number of markets, including western and eastern Europe, Russia and North America,'' Fiat (www.fiat.com) chief executive Sergio Marchionne said at the time.
