Britain is intending to allocate GBR 2.2 million (nearly UAH 29 million) for construction of a centralized radioactive waste storage site in the Chornobyl restricted zone. Ukrainian News learned this from a statement by the British Embassy in Ukraine. According to the statement, Ukrainian Emergency Situations Minister Volodymyr Shandra and British Ambassador to Ukraine Leigh Turner signed a memo in Kyiv on August 31 on mutual understanding between the Ukrainian Emergency Situations and Protection of Population from Chornobyl Disaster Consequences Ministry and The Department of Energy and Climate Change of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. According to a plan, the centralized radioactive waste storage site will be constructed at the industrial site of the Vector complex tentatively by 2012. Minister Volodymyr Shandra said the centralized radioactive waste storage site will be used to burry ionizing radiation sources originating in Ukraine only. According to Ambassador Turner, Britain has granted Ukraine nearly EUR 80 million in technical assistance since the start of realization of the Chornobyl programs. The sides advocated further close cooperation in the area of overcoming consequences of the Chornobyl disaster. As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development said in July 2009 it was intending to allocate EUR 3.5 million to Ukraine for independent assessment of safety of projects concerning the construction of the Dry Spent Fuel Storage Facility 2 and a plant for treatment of liquid radioactive waste at the state specialized enterprise Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. In August 2007 the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has allocated EUR 368 million on an irrevocable basis to Ukraine for implementation of Chornobyl programs. The money was to be spent on the construction of Shelter facility over the fourth reactor at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, on commissioning a plant for treatment of liquid radioactive waste, and to finish the construction of Dry Spent Fuel Storage Facility 2.
