Blue-chip copper and silver producer KGHM and Poland's three biggest power utilities: Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE), Tauron Polska Energia and Enea have signed a letter of intent concerning participation in the preparation, construction and operation of a nuclear power plant, according to their joint release.
The companies will purchase shares in SPV founded by PGE - PGE EJ1, which is directly responsible for the process of building and operating the first Polish nuclear power plant. The letter of intent is valid until Dec 31 of 2012 with the possibility of prolongation for a quarter of a year. The first 3,000 MW nuclear power plant in Poland is due to kick off in 2023 or 2024, according to PGE EJ1's president Aleksander Grad.
Eealirt, the first block was expected to kick off in 2025, while the second one (with the same capacity) - in 2029. The Polish government's representatives earlier said they would like these firms to co-finance the nuclear project.
