“There is no source of energy that would cover our energy needs in 100%, and this is why we return to the distributed energy system. In addition, here we will have to face the coal and oil monopoly. With this in mind, promoting bioenergy is not an easy task. The ‘old’ energy sector is used to considerable transmission capacities and in this regard, the small-scale energy sources do not fit into it. It is essential to make the existing small-scale infrastructure available in the production of bioenergy. We should also lay down the boundaries of import and transport of biomass,” said Minister Sawicki and stressed that we should consider whether importing biomass to Europe from other regions of the world makes any sense whatsoever in the context of, for example, air pollution by significant emission of CO2.
During today’s meeting, Minister Sawicki was accompanied by Secretary of State Kazimierz Plocke and Undersecretary of State Tadeusz Nalewajk. The remaining participants of the conference were the Vice-Ministers of Agriculture from Member States, representatives of the Council, of the European Commission and of the European Parliament, as well as representatives of scientific circles, agriculture-focussed agencies and voivodeship government and self-government administration.
The discussion encompassed issues concerning the development of renewable energy sources in rural areas and using the EU agricultural biomass reserves for energy purposes. Another important element of the meeting was the follow-up of the discussion devoted to the opportunities of improving competitiveness of the EU agriculture by increasing investment in renewable energy sources.
“The basic purpose of agriculture has been and will be the production of healthy and safe food to feed all the people. Production of bioenergy can, however, constitute an additional activity, complementary in terms of generating income in agriculture, using most of all by-products and residues. Moreover, we must remember that it constitutes only a temporary source of energy. Soon, by means of scientific and technical achievements, we will have a chance to produce energy in a simpler and more competitive way,” Minister Sawicki pointed out.
