Netherlands power group Essent is under investigation for improperly exporting waste to Poland, Dutch paper Het Financieele Dagblad reported. According to the daily, the shipments in question were made between December 2007 and December 2008 and involved the transport of as much as 4,000 tonnes of waste, or approximately 273 truckloads. Poland has asked the Netherlands to take the waste back. It is not clear what kind of waste is involved, as the material imported into the country does not match shipping and import documentation, according to the daily. One source interviewed by Het Financieele Dagblad said that the waste was foul-smelling. It appears that Essent subcontracted disposal of the waste to a firm called N/D Recycling. However, who is ultimately at fault over the matter is not yet known. This is not the first time waste sent to Poland did not match the documents it was sent with, a spokesperson for the Polish embassy in the Netherlands told the daily. (RG) |
