It was announced this week that three villages in Slovenia, Zdenska Vas, Mala Vas and Cesta, will benefit from new sewage systems ending their reliance on septic tanks. A packaged treatment plant custom made for the three villages has been manufactured by WPL, a company based in Hampshire, England. Zdenska Vas will be the base for three High Performance Aerated Filter (HiPAF) units that will work together to act as one single treatment system and will connect up to the main sewerage system.
Frantisek Mikulinec, Central European Sales Manager of WPL, has said “In countries such as Slovenia and the Czech Republic there are thousands of small remote villages and many are not connected to a sewerage system. In small villages you can have a very big fluctuation in flows throughout the day when people go to work. Also temperatures in winter can fall to as low as -15c. The advantage of the HiPAF is that it can accommodate fluctuations in flow and temperature variations because Submerged Aerated Filter (SAF) systems like the HiPAF adapt to loading changes more quickly than activated sludge flocs. Intensive nitrification can occur even when the temperatures is low due to biofilm thickness”.
