Chinese companies and institutions have increased their investments in Bulgaria in the 1st 2 quarters of 2013 by up to 5 times the amount that was invested in the same period in 2012. For the first 6 months of 2012 EUR 14 million was invested from China into Bulgaria, this has increased to 85 million in the first six months of 2013.
The investment by China was largely targeted for the Industrial, agricultural, food, building, transport industry, Environmental industry and energy sectors. China’s overall investment in Bulgaria, is only 0.214% of the total foreign direct investment in Bulgaria, totaling EUR 37.7 billion over the past 20 years, as of today China is actually retaining only a relatively small percentage in the Bulgarian investment picture. In comparison, an equivalent investment contribution to our Bulgaria have been made by smaller countries such as Serbia ( EUR 86 .4 million in H1 2013 ) and Estonia ( EUR 80 .9 million in H1 2013 ). Considering China's size and manufacturing muscle then more investment is needed to bring it up to speed with this market, overall Bulgarian companies have invested EUR 950 ,000 in China in recent years, as indicated by the statistics of the Bulgarian National Bank.
